The conference scientific program extends for two days; Monday January 31st and Tuesday February 1st 2011 in morning and evening scientific sessions.
Sustainable development in the Arab region is a great challenge for decision makers, professionals and scientists, not because of the lack of financial resources but due to the harsh climate and shortage of natural resources. Water for example, while scarce in the United Arab Emirates, represents the backbone of the green environment we are aiming at achieving despite the difficulty of the prevailing natural conditions. Therefore, it is not surprising that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates rank the 1st and 2nd worldwide in water desalination, respectively. The main goal of the huge desalination industry, started in the region early during 1950’s, was to bridge the gap between the limited available water resources and the ever increasing demands for water for agriculture, industry and domestic purposes. On the other side, and despite the fact that the Gulf countries are rich in energy resources, there is an urgent need for conservation of conventional energy sources such as oil and natural gas and expansion in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. This practice should have a definite positive reflection on human and the environment as a whole. Three consecutive workshops precede the conference and will be held on Sunday January 30th 2011 addressing green buildings, integrated water resources management and irrigation and renewable energy resources. These specialized workshops are equally important to the conference scientific sessions as there topics match the main themes of the conference. The first workshop deals with the fundamentals of green buildings, sustainability and design. The second workshop addresses the concept of integrated water management and irrigation technologies and practices. The third workshop is about the energy management and applications of renewable energy sources. The three workshops will be delivered by national and international experts, in addition to highly experienced professors from Ajman University of Science and Technology and United Arab Emirates University.
The workshops aim at deepening the environmental awareness of participants and providing them with the state]of-the]art concepts and techniques in green environment, water resources and irrigation and energy conservation. Participants will obtain certificates indicating their participation and successful completion of workshops. Conference Themes The conference has three main themes including: green environment, water and energy; which are further subdivided into sub]topic as follows: 1. Green Environment • Environmental Management, legislation and Control • Environmental Awareness and Health • Pollution • Reservation, Recycling and Reuse • Biodiversity and Protected Areas • Marine Environment • Green Building and Green Economy • Management and Development of Environmental Resources 2. Water • Water Evaluation and Assessment • Water Harvesting • Water Desalination • Water and Wastewater Treatment • Reuse of Treated Water • Integrated Water Resources Management 3. Energy • Conventional Energy Resources • Renewable Energy Resources • Production of Energy from Waste • Energy Conservation and Management Workshops Three specialized workshops will be organized consecutively on Sunday January 30th 2011, matching the main themes of the conference; including:
• Green Buildings • Integrated Water Management and Irrigation • Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Resources These workshops will be delivered to participants by highly qualified experts from Ajman University of Science and Technology, United Arab Emirates University and Ajman Municipality and Planning Department.
